Central Lago and Borromean Islands
Landscape Museum
The Landscape Museum in its evocative spaces of Palazzo Viani Dugnani exhibits to the public the most significant collection of works of art on Lake Maggiore. Paintings and sculptures from the late 19th to the early 20th century tell of the area’s ability to attract and host artists and patrons of international importance: Daniele Ranzoni, Paolo Troubetzkoy, Paolo Veronese, Arturo Martini, among others.
The museum was founded in 1909 as the Museo Storico Artistico del Verbano e delle Valli adiacenti by Antonio Massara. In 1914 it took its current name of Museo del Paesaggio, with the aim of encouraging the study of the region’s natural and artistic beauty and promoting its protection, and found a new home in the municipal-owned Viani-Dugnani palace of the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, Palazzo Viani Dugnani, which has been completely refurbished, houses the painting and sculpture collections.
The most substantial and significant nucleus of the picture gallery is represented by Lombard and Piedmontese painting from the late 19th and early 20th century with important works by Guido Boggiani, Arnaldo Ferraguti, Daniele Ranzoni and Mario Tozzi. The sculpture section includes the gipsoteca with 340 works by the Impressionist sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy (1866-1938) and the significant nuclei of works by Giulio Branca (1850-1926) – representative of 19th century commemorative and historical sculpture – and Arturo Martini (1889-1947), considered the most important Italian sculptor between the two wars.
