The Alts Walserhüüs Van Zer Burfuggu (Old Walser House of Borca) Association was founded in 1982 with the aim of renovating the chaplaincy of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Borca, a valuable building dating back to the 1600s, and using it as a house museum.

A concrete example of a participatory project that saw on the one hand the restoration, strictly conservative, by the founding members and on the other hand the donations of Macugnaga people of the furnishings and objects of the material life of the Walser people.

The museum collection, arranged on three floors, exhibits a wide range of artifacts and visual documents on the “modus vivendi” of the past, dating from the 14th to the 20th century that characterized Walser culture and civilization and that make it possible to highlight the values and concrete practices of the “people of the Alps” confronted on a daily basis with the harshness and difficulties of a high-altitude territory, while also providing original solutions that are now completely obsolete.

The museum is home to the Walser International Library, with an area dedicated to the records of the Mining Company that operated the Macugnaga gold mines until 1961.

The visit to the house museum, which is always guided, takes on great historical interest and is addressed not only to all enthusiasts who appreciate the unknown pages of life in the past, but also to schools who can draw valuable lessons from it to stimulate and compare with today’s reality.
