The alpine lakes and dams of the upper Formazza valley are an important excursion destination for the Ossola and Lake Maggiore area.
It is up here that the Toce River, the main Italian tributary of Lake Maggiore, originates (its counterpart in Switzerland is the Ticino River).
Val Formazza is a beautiful valley wedged in the north of Piedmont between Canton Valais and Canton Ticino.
Precisely because of this direct proximity to Switzerland, the Val Formazza has Walser origins, i.e. the community here from the upper Valais, particularly the Goms valley.
At the start of this tour, in Riale, it is still possible to see signs of that ancient culture.
Afterwards, an excellent path leads us to the large Formazzino plateau dotted with marmot dens, flowers and alpine lakes.
Also of interest is the evident study applied to the territory for the production of electricity through the power of water collected in huge dams and captured in turbines installed in large and artistic hydroelectric power stations.
