The Castles of Cannero Riviera
Cannero Riviera was built on an alluvial promontory on the small river Rio di Cannero.
The Castles are ancient fortifications that rise up out of the water between Cannobio and Cannero Riviera. They were built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries and are divided up onto two islands.
In their time, they served as a place of refuge for the feared robber baron family of the Mazzarditi, before the Borromeo family put a stop to their games and usurped them of their possessions.
