The 9 sacred mounts of Piedmont and Lombardy featured in a NY Times article
‘A Pilgrimage in the Heart of the Italian Alps’ is the title of the article that the famous US newspaper dedicated to the sacred italian mounts
“The Italian Alps are renowned for their breathtaking scenery, good wine and good food. But many travellers don’t know that the region is also home to exquisite Renaissance and Baroque art,’ so introduces the NY Times, which presents the nine sanctuaries of Piedmont and Lombardy as treasure troves of artistic treasures to be discovered.
The Sacri Monti have been included in the Unesco World Heritage List because they are considered powerful symbols of the Counter-Reformation, in which sacred images and the natural landscape are used to create complexes of profound spiritual significance, noteworthy for the quality and variety of the structures and works of art they contain, but also for their close connection with the natural landscape.
“Each of the nine sites – Varallo, Crea, Orta, Varese, Oropa, Ossuccio, Ghiffa, Domodossola and Belmonte – can be easily reached by car or, in the case of Varallo and Varese, by cable car. Many visitors opt for a short trek from the nearest town,’ reads the article.
For the entire month of October 2023, guided tours at the Sacred Mounts of Orta and Varallo will be offered free of charge, without reservation, organised and managed by the Management Authority.
The visits are held every day, from Thursday to Sunday, at various times.
